We are dedicated to the preservation of culinary history and literature. In this area we discuss major library collections of culinary literature and also some of what librarians call "ephemera" (menus, records of various kinds, and even equpment).
A bibliography is a collection of book or article titles relating to a specific field. Culinary historians can find literature by searching bibliographies that have been written by specialists in various fields. We've prepared A Bibliography of Culinary and Gastronomic Bibliographiesto assist you. As we have more time, we'll try to direct you to specific libraries that hold these volumes. Until then you can follow the directions below.
We've included a copy of A Selective Guide to Culinary Library Collections in Canada and the United States to give you an idea of where some of the best culinary collections reside in these countries. To find out what libraries have a specific book, either use the WorldCat facility of a nearby university or consult individual online catalogs.
The catalogs of nearly all major library book and journal collections are accessible on the Web. The Selective Guide
mantioned above gives URLs that were current when the report was produced. If a link is no longer current, try searching
for the name of the institution using a search engine such as Google. Want to find a library not in the report?
Again, try using Google.
